Wood Working Bench Front Vice (Vise) - No racking

$845.00 AUD
Dog Hole Options

World class innovation in the HNT Gordon Front Vice design engages, non-racking mechanical function to solve the negative effects of racking.  Grip wood stock in the far edge of this beautiful vice and it will be held square and tight with very little pressure from a silky-smooth crank handle offering zero backlash. The vice’s finely milled aluminium shaft glides with a running-fit between hard-wearing nylon bushings requiring no service and protecting the vice’s moving parts from dust particles insuring an effortless lifetime of wear and tear.

The concept was so new, combining a range of engineering products designed for different applications, that the HNT team tested the prototypes for five years in the HNT factory in full workshop conditions before releasing them to the market. It was found that the vice is highly efficient - even more so than quick traverse and release vices in most work holding situations. This is due to the absence of racking (racking leads to constant readjustments) and the effortless handle to clamp and unclamp the job without the need for over-tightening.

Another huge benefit of this vice is that it arrives to you complete and ready for installation. Installation on all benches is simple with little to no modification of your bench, with four bolts holding it in place. For more information you can download our installation guide here.

CNC machined to the finest tolerances from brass and aluminium, hand assembled and tested in-house, the HNT Gordon Non-Racking Front Vice is an elegant addition to the workshop ensuring years of pleasure for the hobbyist and professional alike.

Specifications:

The jaw is 160mm x 230mm, with an opening capacity of 150mm. It weighs 8kg and has a 6 TPI ACME thread for fast, smooth action. If you are after a larger vice jaw, you can view our wide jaw front vice here.

Note: The vice does not come with dog holes drilled in the top of the vice as seen in some of the photos/videos. You can select this option before checking out - We will drill two dog holes 40mm from each end, which makes them 150mm apart. We find this to be a good set-up, but if you want different spacing, please email us to order as we will need to customise this for you at an extra cost. If you decide to add dog holes once you receive your vice, we recommend not to do them larger than 1/2" as it may compromise the jaw, and you will lose your warranty.

Accessories available for purchase:

Front jaw Cork Liners are available for better work holding when dealing with timber that is not quite parallel. These are available here.

Tilting vice jaws are available for holding odd-shaped stock like chair legs and musical instrument parts.  The tilting jaw fits into a ½” hole bored into the work-bench. You can find information on these here.

The bench dogs to fit the holes on this vice can be ordered here.

How to Mount your HNT Gordon bench vice:

A unique design feature of our woodworking bench vice is the hidden thread in a self-cleaning shaft. This self-cleaning system means that no dust or shavings can enter the thread or bearing surfaces, meaning no wear can take place over a long period of time. The video below shows this in action:

Easy to fit

It was east to fit following the video instructions. So far it's living up to very high expectations.

Bench vice

We use HNT bench vices in our school, eight of them (for the past 4 years), and newly my personal vice, they are intuitive, require no gimmicks to use, and are nigh on indestructible. What’s not to like.

Please include the mounting screws

I’ve been eyeing this vice for a long time and finally bit the bullet. Haven’t had a chance to try it but by all accounts it should last a lifetime and it does look like a well machined kit. It’s disappointing that there aren’t any coach screws provided as it means I’ll have to delay installing it at least a week or so while I fumble around online to find the right screws. Such a small thing but it changes your user experience.

A ripper of a vice

This is a terrific vice to use, streets ahead of a typical woodworking vice. Installation is relatively easy, with added benefit if you can mount it overlapping a bench leg (if the leg is flush with the bench top) giving more clamping space. It is more expensive; but if you can stretch to the price, it is absolutely worth it.

New Bench but I'm keeping the vice!

After a bit of toing and froing on the idea of a new bench. I decided I would build a new bench dedicated to hand tool use and let go my old bench and it's shortcomings (most...sigh... Ok all of them are my fault). In comparison I knew straight away I would keep the HNT Gordon Bench and Tail Vices! Sod the expense and time of getting alternatives sorted for the old bench but I'm KEEPING those two gorgeously functional mechanisms. They are two exceptional pieces of engineering that do their job and stay completely out of the way. They let me stay focused and engaged in the process of making furniture. It's only when I'm done and admiring the finished piece do I feel how much they got me to the end. Sod it these are MY vices and if you end up with my old bench and are wondering why the two vices seem out of place, well now you know.
