If you don't have a mechanical jointer to dress your boards, a jack plane/scrub plane is the ideal tool for taking a rough sawn board to the point where it can be dressed with a trying plane to achieve a flat surface.
The plane comes with the blade sharp ready to use, however it is sharpened as a smoothing plane blade incase you wish to use it as a smoothing plane. If you would like to use it as a scrub plane to remove material quickly, then we recommend putting a camber in your blade.
It has a blade angle of 55 degrees for planing hard, cranky timbers. Alternate use as a 85 degree cabinet scraper by reversing the blade. It is 300mm long x 67mm wide x 38mm high. Weighs 1.3Kg and has the option of a 50mm wide x 6mm thick x 97mm long Tool Steel (TS) blade hardened to Rc 62-64, or a High Speed Steel (HSS) blade hardened to Rc 62. The HSS is ideal if you plan to reverse the plane to bevel up and use it as a scraper on hard timber.
This plane has no brass insert in the mouth as it is not required for the task it performs.
It makes a difference!
Takes a bit of getting use to, having used a Stanley No. 5 previously. It somehow feels less stable/grounded than a metal plane (lighter and higher from workpiece), but the 55 pitch angle makes a world of difference planing things like spotted gum and other exotic timbers. I introduced a slight camber to the iron for use as a fore plane and paired it with a good mallet. It now works like a charm. Nothing replaces the feeling of wood gliding on wood.
Beautiful to use
Beautiful to use. Still getting the hang of adjusting it (give yourself a few tasks and a couple of hours). It has quite a different feel to an iron plane; but do yourself a favour and try one of Terry's planes properly for a little while. It really is a delight to use. And, like all his kit, looks like a work of art.
This is a beautiful plane which I am still getting to learn to use. It is light unlike a steel plane and can be used in two ways depending on what you want. I marvel at its craftsmanship and plan on buying a smoothing plane next but need to master this one first. I was considering a Veritas which is $100 dearer but glad I bought this and am proud to buy an Australian plane. It fits perfectly on my shooting board too. It’s almost too good to use. I drool over the vices too.
What a plane!!
I love the way it shaves the timber, even the grizzlest of them. It certainly tames the worst, getting them ready for my Lie Nielsen or Wood River jointers, thanks HNT for this Ausi icon, I'll leave it behind for my grandchildren. Keep up the good work
Perfect plane. Zero complaints. Brilliant customer service.
Received my jack plane today and wow. It’s a special tool that I’ll never sell for the rest of my life. Works perfectly out of the box. Takes amazingly thin shavings and an absolute pleasure to use. My only problem now is how I’m going to afford more planes from Terry. Cannot recommend enough.
