If you don't have a mechanical jointer to dress your boards, a jack plane/scrub plane is the ideal tool for taking a rough sawn board to the point where it can be dressed with a trying plane to achieve a flat surface.
The plane comes with the blade sharp ready to use, however it is sharpened as a smoothing plane blade incase you wish to use it as a smoothing plane. If you would like to use it as a scrub plane to remove material quickly, then we recommend putting a camber in your blade.
It has a blade angle of 55 degrees for planing hard, cranky timbers. Alternate use as a 85 degree cabinet scraper by reversing the blade. It is 300mm long x 67mm wide x 38mm high. Weighs 1.3Kg and has the option of a 50mm wide x 6mm thick x 97mm long Tool Steel (TS) blade hardened to Rc 62-64, or a High Speed Steel (HSS) blade hardened to Rc 62. The HSS is ideal if you plan to reverse the plane to bevel up and use it as a scraper on hard timber.
This plane has no brass insert in the mouth as it is not required for the task it performs.
In a word, amazing. Its light weight and easy to handle , so you can use it for longer without tiring. The blade holds it edge even on tough hardwoods for far longer than my other standard planes. What I thought might be a bit tricky with the blade adjustment is actually really easy and you get a keener sense and ability to set the blade the more you use it. I have found that this plane makes my Stanley No4 smoother redundant as I can get it squarer and smoother with the Jack plane. Saving up for the trying plane...and the vice....oh, and the spoke shave... -
The workmanship and performance are second to none.
I’d never used a tap plane before and was apprehensive about buying one. It’s actually really easy to use and setup. I’ve used it everyday now for 2 weeks and got it wired. Regular honing maintains the edge. The timber sole is smooth to use. An excellent tool that should last me a lifetime.
I have purchased a few of the HNT Gordon products, including the Jack Plane and the Trying Plane. I absolutely love, love, love all of the items so far. Being an engineer, I appreciate these products not only for their function but also for their beauty and workmanship. They are a pleasure to look at and to use. If you are wondering how fine the shavings can be, think of bonito flakes on takoyaki, it is that good. On top of that, the service and responsiveness from the company has been impeccable.
This is a very well made hand plane that functions exactly as intended. Much better for general planing than the high-end iron equivalent thanks to the lower weight. It's fantastic to own something like this and a real pleasure to use.
