Palm Smoothing Plane
This Palm Smoothing plane is your best friend for trimming and touch up work. It has a higher blade pitch (of 60 degrees) to deal with cranky and hard timbers, but is also at home on soft woods. You can also reverse the blade to use it as a 90 degree cabinet scraper. Used for final Smoothing or trimming of any small timber surface. Perfect for making small boxes out of decorative solid timber or veneers, or for the final finishing work on a near complete cabinet.
This gidgee palm smoothing plane is 125mm long x 38mm wide x 25mm high. Weighs 250grams and has a 30mm wide x 3mm thick x 65mm long HSS 18% Tungsten blade hardened to Rc 62.
Absolute delight to use. Plane nice and small and fits snugly in your hand for one hand operation. Blade is thick and sharp ready for use out of the box. Easy to setup with light taps for feather thin shavings. Love it
It isn’t until you’ve owned a plane like this that you realise how useful it is!
Had another fun day in the shop. So much so that I have to share ! My friend throughout the process of hanging these doors has been that little marvel of a Palm Smoother. This is so aptly named, just exactly what it is. I have it set to take off the finest slivers and it has helped me to get the best results ever achieved at a task that I have always dreaded. Although I own a few, I have never really liked block planes. I find them difficult to hold on to, always scared they are going to fall from my hand. Not this, its lighter and feels so positive in the hand. I am so surprised by what I am able to do with this little tool, kept reaching for it constantly. Just perfect for smoothing the edges of doors and getting those gaps right. I hope you will be producing some more of these in the specialty woods soon. One is not enough ! You are a genius Terry !" Cheers, John
A few weeks ago, when I opened the box, I discovered a tiny wooden block plane. It was beautifully made from a dark dense wood, with a soft touch and looking almost like a toy… but a toy is made for playing whereas this palm smoothing plane quickly confirmed it is an impressive tool. The past days I had been fighting to square a piece of Iroko with highly interlocked grain and another one of Tassie curly myrtle. A nightmare: Two attempts with my usual high-end block planes had led to **** tearouts… It took me 10 min to adjust perfectly the blade (this is my fist wooden plane) and - without too much illusion- I tried to clean the damages with my new “toy”. The first attempt was successful: thanks to the high blade pitch, I got full width thin shavings and it took 4-5 passes to get rid of tearouts and obtain clean smooth edges. Impressive. From now, I keep the palm smoothing plane on hand. It combines an efficient simplicity, the pleasant touch of a wooden tool and the soul of craftsmanship. Thank you to HNT Gordon. I’m already looking in the catalogue to give my palm plane a new "taller brother".
Very well made and ready to use straight out of the box. Delivery was very quick especially as this was around the Christmas period. I find that I reach for this plane far more than I do my block plane for small tasks, slowly getting the hang of fine setting of the iron. Great tools, enjoy using it.
