A55 Trying Plane

$660.00 AUD
Blade Type

This Trying Plane (alternatively known as a jointer or jointing plane) has an adjustable blade set at 55 degrees - which excels on hard, cranky woods. Alternative use as a 85 degree cabinet scraper by reversing the blade. Used for smoothing long surfaces, and jointing long boards.

This Gidgee A55 trying plane is 460mm long x 67mm wide x 41mm high. Weighs 1.9Kg and has the option of a 50mm wide x 6mm thick x 101mm long Tool Steel (TS) blade hardened to Rc 62-64 or a High Speed Steel (HSS) blade hardened to Rc 62. The HSS is ideal if you plan to reverse the plane to bevel up and use it as a scraper on hard timber.

For adjustment there is a fine thread screw with lateral movement (10th of a turn gives meaningful change in depth). The mouth is protected by a brass rub plate. Knob and tote handle superbly shaped by Ross Burgess.

Works very well when used on a shooting board.  A cabinet makers work horse.

There's no "Trying" to love this plane!

As functional as it is beautiful. Flawless manufacturing, beautiful brass inlays and feels like an extension of my hand. Right out of the box I was able to make fine shavings without sharpening. Proceeded to Tear the plane down it to inspect and do a quick sharpen. It went back together with ease. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another HNT Gordon product. Customer service was also fantastic. Zamantha wrote me the day after I made the order providing an alternate distributor in the US that could be faster with less shipping. Speaks volumes regarding the integrity of HNT Gordon & Co.

*** Trying plane with HSS iron

Couldn't be happier with this purchase. This plane is lovely to look at and to hold and it doesn't disappoint in action. My new favourite plane.

*** Trying Plane - that sound...

I recently received my *** Trying plan with a HSS blade. My first project using this plane has been to flatten my new 1.2m x 0.7m Mountain Ash/Tassie Oak workbench top. That sound... shhhhhht, shhhhhht, shhhhhht, shhhhhht, shhhhhht.... music... and now a perfectly flat and square workbench top that needs virtually no sanding.
