Specialty Plough/Plow Plane - Ebony

$1,943.00 AUD

Introducing the new HNT Gordon Plough/Plow Plane - the last plane that Terry Gordon will personally design and make. The plow plane is the last plane in the Joinery plane series to join the shoulder, dado, side rebate and moving fillister planes - which are used for doing complex and accurate furniture joinery with planes.

The Plough Plane is engineered to cut a precise groove in long grain, with a set measurement of up to 42mm (1.21/32") from an edge and a maximum depth of 16mm (5/8").

The fence arm features a built-in scale in both imperial and metric measurements. When placing an order for the Plough Plane, please specify your preferred measurement type for the fence arm setup. Your nominated scale will be positioned on the top of the fence for easy reading; however, you can read the alternate scale from the underside of the fence if required. The scale is calibrated to measure from the side of the wood to the left side of the grove being formed. This is the same for any size blade. The photo shows the metric scale with 1mm increments and a larger mark every 5mm.   The imperial scale is in 1/32" increments with a larger mark every 1/4".

The Plow plane fence arms operate independently, allowing you to easily set the fence perfectly parallel to the plane body. A plow plane will not function well unless the fence is set perfectly parallel. The fence arms allow for the fence to be set from 0 to 42mm (1.21/32").   The fence arm has a nicely knurled Knob that allows for easy adjustment. This feature makes for very efficient and accurate adjustment of fence position, making it a joy to use.

The adjustable depth stop allows the user to set an accurate depth from 0 to 16 mm (0 to 5/8") using a ruler. The depth stop is moved by a nicely knurled knob on the top of the plane body.

The curved shape on the Plow fence is perfectly positioned to allow pressure from the 4 fingers on your left hand to hold the fence firmly against the wood surface. Holding the fence correctly is essential for accurate groves made by the plow plane.

The Plow/Plough Plane is equipped with a standard ¼” or 6mm blade. Additional sizes are available for separate purchase: 4mm, 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, and 16mm, or in imperial measurements: 1/8”, 3/16”, 5/16”, 3/8”, ½”, and 5/8”. Blades in other specific sizes can be custom-ordered.

The last photo shows the refinements of this plane for efficient and accurate joinery. You will notice the blade sides are relieved by a few degrees which prevents to blade jamming in the grove particularly as the grove gets deeper. Irrespective of the blade width in use, the left side of the blade sits firmly against the depth stop foot, which is slightly relieved, to ensure the correct amount of blade extends past the skate on both sides. This is particularly important for the 1/8" blade as the skate is just slightly less in width. This design also allows for the accurate alignment of the fence scale during the making process. These refinements make this plow plane unlike any on the market, and a pleasure to use.

The plane will come with full setup instructions - covering setting and removing the blade, setting the fence, setting the depth, cutting the groove and sharpening.

Price includes one blade that is 6mm or 1/4". Extra blades are $80 each - please email us or leave a note with your order if you would like to purchase more blades.

I recommend this product

What an amazing tool! Thank you so much!

I have waited to get the plane to use before publishing any review. I do own a quite lot of HNT Gordon planes and vices, but I have to confess that this one is probably the most impressive. As a professional woodworker I have never been quite satisfied with plow planes. Especially when working with long pieces of hard wood. This one on the opposite is perfectly balanced, and the attention put into the fence to make it more ergonomic makes, I think, a huge difference. It is much more easier to keep the plane in line and insure crisp, straight grooves. I have just used it for a wide sideboard with sliding doors and it does work like a dream. And of course it is beautifully crafted (the ebony is gorgeous!). I do thank you very much for having created this plane. As usual, you have my best regards from Sweden.
