This block plane has a higher blade pitch of 55 degrees - being optimised for hard, cranky timber, however it works equally as well on softer woods. You can also reverse the blade to create a 85 degree cabinet scraper, which gets you out of trouble when working with really hard cranky woods that can't be planed. Used for general purpose planing or trimming of any small pieces of timber, particularly hardwood and end grain. Easily used in one hand.
This Gidgee Block plane is 175mm long x 54mm wide x 38mm high. Weighs 0 .8Kg and has the option of a 1. 1/2" wide x 1/8" thick x 81mm long Tool Steel (TS) blade hardened to Rc 62-64 OR a High Speed Steel (HSS) blade hardened to Rc 62. The HSS is ideal if you plan to reverse the plane to bevel up and use it as a scraper on cranky woods. Knob handle superbly shaped by Ross Burgess.
This is the second plane from HNT ..love
Of all of my 4 HNT Gordon planes, the block is the only one that I personally don’t really like. I find it too close in size to the smoothing plane which I use in preference and find more versatile.
This block plane was the perfect birthday present from my family. It’s a great feeling to know that there’s still amazing craftsman using there talent and skills to make these beautiful planes.
Haven't used the plane just yet but it looks to be every bit as well made as the jack plane which I use daily, now.
I used to think wooden planes were very much in the ‘has been’ category, probably due to poorly maintained examples you find in second hand shops and experiences with blunt planes at school. This plane utterly changes my view! It’s such a pleasure to use and easy to set up. The only downside that I can see is the cost of all the other planes from HNT Gordon which are now on my wishlist!
