A55 jointer Plane

$822.00 AUD
Blade Type

This Gidgee Jointer plane (also known as a Jointer or Trying Plane) has an adjustable blade at 55 degrees, optimised for hard, cranky woods. Alternate use as a cabinet scraper by reversing the blade. Used for planing long boards and jointing boards.

A55 Jointer planes are available from 610mm long up to 685mm long x 70mm wide X 48mm high. If you would like a specific length please leave a message when you checkout to specify the length. You will see the text box available when you check out that says 'please leave special instructions below'.

It weighs 3.1 kg and has the option of a 50mm wide x 6mm thick x 110mm long Tool Steel (TS) blade hardened to Rc 62-64 OR a High Speed Steel (HSS) blade hardened to Rc 62.  The HSS is ideal if you plan to reverse the plane to bevel up and use it as a scraper on hard timber.

It has a 55 degrees blade angle for planing or 85 degrees for scraping. For adjustment there is a fine thread screw with lateral movement (10th turn gives meaningful change in depth). The mouth is protected by a brass rub plate. Knob and tote handle superbly shaped by Ross Burgess.

Used for final smoothing of any long timber surface which has been dressed by a planer, thicknesser or Jack Plane. Used correctly this plane will smooth any difficult timber surface leaving little or no sanding. A cabinet makers work horse.

Highly Recommended - Best Jointer I've Used

I bought a 685mm version just over a year ago and I couldn't be happier with it. I've used it to joint up hundreds of boards for big panel glue ups and worktops. I've also used it here and there for flattening big tables, worktops, handrails and a beam. The combination of the long length and more central position of the cutting iron make it better than any other jointer I've used. In the past I used a LN low angle jack or a Woden 5, for jointing smaller boards and then a LN 8 or Bedrock 8 for the big stuff. Since I got the *** I've not reached for my number 8's at all, and I only use the metal jack planes for short stuff. The *** is much lighter and better balanced than the others. The dimensions are perfect and make it feel far more solid and stable in use than any other plane. I also found it to be much more ergonomic than my antique wooden jointers. The *** has proved to be far more dimensionally stable and harder wearing than my other wooden planes. I flattened the sole once early on after it had acclimated to my workshop, but it didn't need much and I've not had to touch it since. I've checked it at least once every season and it's remained flat to within at least 0.05mm, which is exactly where it was when I first flattened it. The TS cutting iron is excellent. Considering how thick and hard the steel is, sharpening by hand is relatively easy. It takes and holds an edge as well as any of the other high-end modern blades I've used. Overall, I think this plane is as good as it gets.

jointer plane and smoothing plane

The two planes are absolutely fabulous. I have never used a plane like them. I can finish off old reused Australian hardwood timber from old sheds that I couldn't even plane before without tearing big junks out of them or just slipping over the top of them. The jointer plane is big and doesn't take any more effort to use than a smaller plane and straightens out timber really well. With it and the smoothing plane I got a shiny beautiful finish. The next plane on my list to get is the Jack plane.
