Specialty Plough/Plow Plane - Ebony

$2,066.00 AUD

Introducing the HNT Gordon Plough/Plow Plane, designed by Terry Gordon as the latest addition to our Joinery Plane Series.

The Plough Plane completes a highly versatile group of joinery planes alongside our Shoulder, Dado, Side Rebate and Moving Fillister planes, each developed for accurate, efficient furniture joinery using hand tools.

The Plough Plane is engineered to cut precise grooves in long grain, with the fence adjustable up to 42mm (1 21/32") from the edge of the workpiece and a maximum groove depth of 16mm (5/8").

Fence Adjustment

The fence arms operate independently, allowing the fence to be set accurately parallel to the plane body. This is particularly important with a plough plane, as an accurately aligned fence is essential for producing straight, consistent grooves.

The fence can be positioned from 0 to 42mm (1 21/32") from the edge of the workpiece. Each fence arm is adjusted using a finely knurled knob, making small and accurate adjustments quick and easy.

A built-in scale is provided in both metric and imperial measurements. When ordering your Plough Plane, please nominate your preferred scale. This will be positioned on the top of the fence arms for easy reading, while the alternate scale remains visible from underneath.

The scale measures from the edge of the timber to the left side of the groove being formed, regardless of the blade width being used.

The metric scale is marked in 1mm increments, with larger markings every 5mm. The imperial scale is marked in 1/32" increments, with larger markings every 1/4".

Depth Adjustment

The adjustable depth stop allows the groove depth to be set anywhere from 0 to 16mm (5/8"). The stop is adjusted using the knurled knob on top of the plane body and can be accurately set using a ruler.

Fence Design

The curved shape of the fence has been designed to sit naturally beneath the four fingers of the left hand, allowing firm and comfortable pressure to be applied against the edge of the workpiece.

Maintaining this pressure is an important part of producing an accurate groove, particularly over longer lengths of timber.

Blades

The Plough/Plow Plane is supplied with your choice of a standard 6mm or 1/4" High Speed Steel blade.

Additional blade sizes are available separately:

Metric:
4mm, 8mm, 10mm, 12mm and 16mm

Imperial:
1/8", 3/16", 5/16", 3/8", 1/2" and 5/8"

Other specific blade sizes can also be custom ordered.

The sides of the blades are relieved by a few degrees, helping prevent the blade from binding in the groove as the cut becomes deeper.

Regardless of blade width, the left side of the blade registers firmly against the depth stop foot. The foot itself is slightly relieved, ensuring the correct amount of blade projects beyond the skate on both sides. This is particularly important when using the narrow 1/8" blade, where the skate is only slightly narrower than the cutter.

This arrangement also allows the fence scale to be accurately calibrated during manufacture.

These small refinements are characteristic of Terry Gordon's approach to plane design: concentrating on the details that make a hand plane easier to set, more predictable to use and capable of producing consistently accurate joinery.
