Specialty Plough/Plow Plane - Cocobolo

$1,913.00 AUD

The Plough Plane is the final piece in our Joinery Plane series, joining the shoulder, dado, side rebate and moving fillister planes. Together, they are built for complex, repeatable furniture joinery with the kind of accuracy you can feel in the cut, and the quiet satisfaction that comes from a tool doing exactly what it was designed to do.

At its core, the Plough Plane is engineered to cut a precise groove in long grain, up to 42 mm (1 21/32") from an edge, with a maximum depth of 16 mm (5/8"). Every adjustment is designed to be straightforward, dependable, and genuinely enjoyable to use.

Fence and measurement system
The fence arm features an integrated scale, available in either metric or imperial. When ordering, nominate your preferred measurement type and we will set that scale on the top face of the fence for easy reading. The alternate scale can still be read from the underside if required. The scale is calibrated from the side of the timber to the left side of the groove being formed, and this remains consistent for every blade width.
Metric scale: 1 mm increments, with a larger mark every 5 mm.
Imperial scale: 1/32" increments, with a larger mark every 1/4".

Independent fence arms, parallel control
The fence arms operate independently so you can set the fence perfectly parallel to the plane body, which is essential for a plough plane to perform at its best. The fence position adjusts from 0 to 42 mm (1 21/32"), with knurled knobs that make fine adjustments quick, accurate, and repeatable.

Depth stop, set it and trust it
The adjustable depth stop allows an accurate depth setting from 0 to 16 mm (0 to 5/8") using a ruler. It is controlled by a knurled knob on the top of the plane body, making it easy to dial in and hold its setting.

Fence shape, designed for real hands
The curved profile of the fence is positioned to suit natural hand pressure, allowing the four fingers of your left hand to hold the fence firmly against the work. That consistent pressure is key to producing straight, accurate grooves.

Blades and sizes
The Plough Plane is supplied with one blade, either 6 mm or 1/4". Additional blades are available for separate purchase:
Metric: 4 mm, 8 mm, 10 mm, 12 mm, 16 mm
Imperial: 1/8", 3/16", 5/16", 3/8", 1/2", 5/8"
Other specific sizes can be custom ordered.

Refinements that make it different
For efficient, accurate joinery, the blade sides are relieved by a few degrees to prevent jamming in the groove, especially as the cut gets deeper. Regardless of blade width, the left side of the blade registers firmly against the depth stop foot (which is subtly relieved) to ensure the correct amount of blade extends past the skate on both sides. This matters most with the 1/8" blade, where the skate is only slightly narrower, and it also supports accurate alignment of the fence scale during manufacture. These details are the difference between a tool that works, and a tool that feels effortless.

Included and support
Your plane includes full setup instructions covering blade installation and removal, fence setting, depth setting, cutting the groove, and sharpening.

Pricing
Price includes one 6 mm or 1/4" blade. Extra blades are $80 each. Email us or leave a note with your order if you would like additional blades.

I recommend this product

What an amazing tool! Thank you so much!

I have waited to get the plane to use before publishing any review. I do own a quite lot of HNT Gordon planes and vices, but I have to confess that this one is probably the most impressive. As a professional woodworker I have never been quite satisfied with plow planes. Especially when working with long pieces of hard wood. This one on the opposite is perfectly balanced, and the attention put into the fence to make it more ergonomic makes, I think, a huge difference. It is much more easier to keep the plane in line and insure crisp, straight grooves. I have just used it for a wide sideboard with sliding doors and it does work like a dream. And of course it is beautifully crafted (the ebony is gorgeous!). I do thank you very much for having created this plane. As usual, you have my best regards from Sweden.
